As we age, does our metabolism slow down and that is why we tend to get fat?

Updated: Jul 24, 2018

When most of us ask talk about that, we actually mean the Basal Metabolism Rate (BMR), the rate at which the body uses energy while at rest to maintain vital functions such as breathing and keeping warm.

But in fact, what makes us to gain weight or loose it is our Total Daily Energy Expenditure Which is an estimation of how many calories you burn per day when exercise is taken into account. It is calculated by first figuring out your Basal Metabolic Rate, then multiplying that value by an activity multiplier.

In a study, conducted by The Louisiana Healthy Aging Study (*), it wast found a difference at the BMR within older and younger subjects.

However, this difference was only by 24kcal.

While we are aging, we drive to work, we skip the exercises.

Lack of activity leads to less calories consumed and also it leads to muscle loss which leads to less calories burned as well.

So if you want to live long and live well, let's start cycling, hiking, walking, dancing...

Our body is made to move! It is that simple!
